ZyXEL NWA210AX

The Zyxel NWA210AX is a wall- and ceiling-mountable access point (AP).

Zyxel NWA210AX

  • In OEM web interface navigate to gear icon → System → SSH and enable SSH.
  • Log in via SSH (username/password are the same as for the web interface).
  • Run debug dual-image show.
  • Verify that output is Current Image num: 1.
  • If this is not the case (i.e. if the output is Current Image num: 0):
    • a. Either flash a fresh version of factory firmware, or
    • b. run debug dual-image set boot-image image1 and then run reboot.
  • Log in via SSH again and verify that output is Current Image num: 1.
  • Rename openwrt-qualcommax-ipq807x-zyxel_nwa210ax-squashfs-factory.bin to openwrt.bin to avoid upload errors in the OEM web interface.
  • Reopen OEM web interface, navigate to wrench icon → File Manager → Firmware Package and upload the bin file. Once the upgrade process is finished and OpenWrt has booted, the LED will light up green.
  • OpenWrt → Zyxel via ssh command zyxel-bootconfig-ipq807x set image1.
  • Zyxel → OpenWrt via ssh command debug dual-image set boot-image image0.

Basic configuration After flashing, proceed with this.
Set up your Internet connection, configure wireless, configure USB port, etc.

Serial connection parameters for ZyXEL NWA210AX 115200, 8N1, 3.3V

Unusually, this device has an externally accessible serial port which is 3.3V “logic level” UART (not RS232). This takes the form of standard 2.54mm (0.1 inch) spaced header pins, which can be used with 2.54mm “dupont” style female plugs.

Remove the soft plastic dust plug next to the Ethernet port. The pin assignments are:

Pin 1: 3.3V **OUTPUT** ("▲" is printed on the case next to this pin).
Pin 2: TX data from AP.
Pin 3: RX data to AP.
Pin 4: GND/reference.

As with all logic level ports, caution should be exercised when making connections; the connected electronic components could be damaged by incorrect connections, and/or electro static discharge (ESD). The 3.3V output pin should only be connected to adapters which require a voltage input from the target device - usually only (relatively rare) optically or magnetically isolated types - if in doubt, leave pin 1 unconnected.
